Question - Is It Okay to Take Thyroid Medication While TTC?

"Will taking thyroid medicine have an effect on pregnancy? My levels have dropped to 2.2 and I wish to try for a baby. My doctor has written a prescription for Clomid and I want to know if it will react wrongly with my medication?"

Response - If you have thyroid disease, it's important to know that it can hamper your fertility and pregnancy if left untreated. So, treating your disease with thyroid medication is very important. Thyroid medication is actually thyroid hormone, not some other chemical that is having an effect on your thyroid gland. Since all bodies need a certain level of thyroid hormone to function properly, treatment by adjusting the hormones is essential.

That said, you should also know that most reproductive specialists feel that a TSH in the low normal range is usually better for promoting conception. In fact, the level that you state in your question is often seen as optimal for conception.

There should be no reaction at all between your clomiphene citrate (brand name Clomid) and your thyroid medication. If anything, having your thyroid hormone moderated and monitored should have a more positive effect on how your body responds to clomiphene.
