So, you think you’re interested? What We Offer
We expect our contributors to provide flavorful and thought-provoking pieces. We want our site filled with high-quality, intelligent and entertaining works. If it's factually based work, we want creativity with bonafide references. While we're certainly open to qualified reprints, we love originality. We offer $25 to $40 for individual (non-column) pieces and $30 each for column piece. At this time, we are only able to pay for original, unpublished pieces. We will happily consider your reprints, but compensation for same will be via promotion on the website.

HTMAF provides bylines and we require that writers present a short bio with a photograph on the site. We are also happy to discuss other forms of reciprocation, including website links, limited advertisement and other efforts to promote a contributor and/or their business activities.

Through written agreement with all content contributors, HTMAF requests the following:

  • Exclusive electronic rights for ninety (90) days, and non-exclusive thereafter (this means we can keep the piece in our archives for as long as we think appropriate). Our electronic rights allow us to share the article with any future partner sites, as long as that content is presented in HTMAF format, with our logo, full credit to the author, and links back to the original publication page and the author's HTMAF bio page.
  • After our exclusive electronic rights expire, the rights revert to the author, who is free to republish elsewhere. However, we do request that HTMAF be credited as the place of original publication, with either a link to our homepage or our printed web address (www.HowToMakeAFamily.com).

We request that writers sign a contract when we accept an article or column idea for publication.

    Specifics

    Columns

A written piece will be considered a column if it is (a) 1500 words or less in length and (b) is contributed to by a writer or writers on an ongoing, contractually-based period of time. Columns may be weekly, twice monthly, or monthly. Columns will generally be separate pieces written within a broad, stated context. While the column title will remain the same over time, each piece within a certain column may be subtitled. Writers applying for a Column position will be asked to present related, verifiable work references and at least three (3) writing samples.

    Feature Articles

A written piece will be considered a feature article if it is (a) 3000 words or less in length and (b) is a single contribution on a given topic by the writer/s. Each feature is to be individually contracted between the contributor and HTMAF. While we welcome multiple features by a single writer or writing team in the same broad topic category, we will encourage those wishing to regularly submit writings within a single broad topic category to consider proposing or joining a column rather than feature-writing.

    Q&A

Question & Answer, or Q&A, columns will be available to those individuals (a) who can demonstrate a high level of expertise in a field and who are (b) wishing and available to write with the regularity and brevity of a column. Questions will be sent on contractually based regularity to the expert, who in turn will agree to respond within a specified period of time. Writers applying for a Q&A position will be expected to present proof of expertise by way of related, verifiable work references, and an in-depth bio for publication on the site.

    Reference Materials

A written piece will be considered reference material if it is (a) 3000 words or less in length and (b) can be considered a fact-based source by readers. Reference materials should contain no expressions of opinion or other non-factual information by the writer, and must contain as part of the piece a researchable bibliography.
